Portfolio/A small, contemporary, sloping garden in Binfield, Berkshire

<-- Portfolio Index

This small back garden in Binfield, Berkshire illustrates perfectly what can be achieved in a small space with careful planning and a simple design. The garden was a challenge in many ways. It had been completely destroyed during the construction of a large new conservatory. It slopes from top to bottom and across its width, and is very shady. The clients wanted an area by the house large enough to accommodate their barbeque, a seating area in the sunniest part of the garden, and a flat area where their grandchildren could come and play ball games without damaging themselves or the garden.

I split the garden into three terraced areas. The upper terrace wraps around the house connecting the lounge which has access to the garden via a set of French doors and the conservatory on the other side. This level is wide enough to accommodate comfortably a barbecue and its accompanying chef; it is paved with Indian Sandstone in Fossil Mint and has a number of large planted pots around its periphery.

The second level is accessed via steps from the upper level and is a dining/sun bathing terrace. It is large enough for a six-seater table surrounded by large planted pots. This area has achieved exactly what the client required, it is a secluded, area for dining and sitting which gets the sun for most of the day. It is paved with black Limestone and retained with a cream painted, rendered blockwork wall.

The third, lowest level is paved with a smooth slab and self-binding gravel to make a level surface for games of cricket and football. On this level there is a raised border constructed from railway sleepers which serves the dual function of raising the planting out of harm's way and providing a barrier to prevent soil erosion from the garden into the neighbour's garden. This raised border is planted with some standard Photinia 'Red Robin' underplanted with Hebes and Epimediums, there is a small tree, Acer Platnoides 'Brilliantissimum', in the corner which can be kept pruned to ensure it provides privacy but doesn't become too large for the garden.

Stainless steel railings provide the finishing touch for this garden and run around the top level and the dining terrace, giving safety and a contemporary finish.
