Having had a new conservatory built onto the back of this lovely Victorian house had made a mess of this large garden in Crowthorne, Berkshire. The clients wanted a new scheme that would add value to the house, and be somewhere to entertain their family and friends.

An old storage shed was removed and replaced with a new shed, which was screened with a pergola that ends in an octagonal arbour with raised borders filled with Lavender to create a secluded seating area. The wooded area at the bottom of the garden was cleared out of all scrubby undergrowth so that the lovely old pine trees could be fully appreciated, some new trees were planted and the whole area was planted with some shade tolerating shrubs and herbaceous plants. The rest of the garden was terraced into three levels. Two raised lawns are connected by steps and a central pond consisting of a large upper pool that spills into a lower reservoir gives a focal point for the garden and provides the cooling sound of running water. A large terrace accessible from the kitchen and conservatory can hold a table large enough to accommodate the whole family. A wide path with a seating area under a new Catalpa bignonoides winds up and around the garden. Shrubs and colourful herbaceous planting fill the borders and provide year-round colour and interest.
