The brief for this front garden in Crowthorne, Berkshire was to create more parking space without making the front of the house look like a car park. It’s a difficult task and the balance between garden and car parking is often ignored. The parking was extended across the front of the house where there are no windows. There are some planted pots on one side of the entrance that can be moved when guests are expected to give yet more parking space.

A lawn and planting that included a large feature pot were designed across the front of the house where the lounge window looks out and around the side of the house into a rather dark, formerly neglected area. The old Aucuba hedge was removed and a low Taxus hedge gives a more formal look to the garden. This is contrasted by a range of shrubs, ferns and herbaceous plants that give colour at most times of the year. The scheme uses flowing curves to take the hard edge off the new block-paved driveway, and the softness of the lawn and planting helps to minimise the impact of the hard paving.
