This long-narrow garden in Caversham, Berkshire is overlooked on all sides. The client required an interesting space with lots of planting to help screen borders and provide privacy, a vegetable garden, a place for her children to have their own space and an interesting water feature.
We removed the lawn and created an ‘S’ shaped path that winds up the narrowest part of the garden stopping at an octagonal summer house where the kids can escape with their friends even if the weather is a bit miserable. This winding path helps to create interest and draws the eye away from the rear of the garden giving the impression of greater width. At the bottom of the garden are the shed, greenhouse and a good-sized vegetable plot with railway sleeper raised beds and borders for soft fruits and fruit trees. This area is screened from the rest of the garden by trellis panels with a central archway that is covered with scented climbing plants. The vegetable garden is particularly peaceful and gets most of the sunshine.
There is a large patio directly outside the dining room with a water-feature consisting of a large cobbled reservoir and three foaming fountains. Planting is mostly shade-tolerant as the garden is heavily shaded on one side by the neighbours’ trees and consisting of a mixture of shrubs and herbaceous planting. The planting has been designed to provide year-round colour and interest.”
