The brief for this very overgrown rear garden in Maidenhead was to create more open space and a feeling of a smart city park. The client wanted no grass, a large garden office from which to run a small business and a shady place to sit and relax.
The planting had to contain a lot of herbaceous perennials as the client enjoys flower arranging and is a keen gardener.

The garden was designed on the diagonal to make it feel larger and deeper. There is a large terrace paved in black Limestone, paths are contrasting silver grey self-compacting gravel with a black granite sett edging. The garden room is surrounded by a black painted deck and that leads into a formal seating area enclosed by clipped Hornbeam hedging with a central water feature and some spiral topiary in beautiful silver pots. The terrace includes a summer house with built in seating to provide a shady area to relax and eat.
A striking feature is a deep triangular border with a standard Catalpa bignonioides, where Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ forms the backdrop to herbaceous planting carefully chosen to be useful for flower arrangements. Herbaceous planting around the rest of the garden also uses a mixture of plants chosen for their suitability for flower arrangements, and compatibility with the overall garden colour scheme.
