This garden in Woking, Surrey just needed a little tweaking. The client is a keen gardener and knowledgeable plantsman and wanted to make some changes to the garden to accommodate his growing family’s needs and give him more space for plants.
The brief was to make the rear garden completely safe for children to play in, to create interest in a neglected area of the garden, and provide space for some new herbaceous planting. A larger patio was required, and a new path from the side entrance linking up to the patio. Some new planting was required to the front of the property as this area had become rather overgrown and presented an uninspiring entrance to the house.
The garden was secured by constructing a wall with inset railings and a gate across the side of the property. The patio was enlarged and re-shaped and paved with stone lifted during the construction of the conservatory. The patio incorporates a child-safe water feature comprising a stone monolith that sits on a bed of cobbles.
A new path loops around the side of the house through the new gate and links up with the extended patio; this was also paved with the re-claimed stone. The construction of the new path created a nice deep border around the conservatory which was planted up with a mixture of evergreen shrubs and herbaceous perennials. An Oak and steel pergola spans the new path and is covered with climbers that provide scent and interest all year round. The pergola provides height and interest in this erstwhile dead area and has created a lovely entrance into the rear garden.
