This garden in Windsor, Berkshire is long and narrow - typical of many Victorian terraced house rear gardens. Whilst many people wish to shut themselves away from neighbours, often for good reason, this client gets on very well with their neighbour and did not wish to erect a high fence or hedge to screen them out. The garden design brief was to create a small patio area directly outside the new conservatory with a small privacy screen, which would then run into a low picket fence between the two properties, and another more private dining space at the bottom of the garden which gets the last of the evening sun. The client wanted the garden design to include a low maintenance water feature, a lawn and plenty of interesting planting. |

I created a series of asymmetric bands across the garden to help visually widen the garden. These each band is edged with granite setts and contains either a planted border, a lawn, or blue slate chippings to give texture to the design and emphasise the shapes within the garden. One of the slate bands contains two simple steel dish water features which overflow into reservoirs concealed beneath the slate to provide moving water and act as focal points. |

The outdoor dining room was screened with square posts and trellis, with a simple archway into the area. The smaller patio was screened with a series of round posts set at intervals to give some privacy. |

The garden was planted with a mixture of low maintenance shrubs, perennials and grasses to give year-round colour and interest. |
