The brief was to brighten up this dark north-facing garden, creating a space where children could play safely by day and grownups could party in style during the evenings. We hid the base of an ugly old hedge using raised beds constructed from railway sleepers, filled with shade tolerant plants. Brick-edged lawns are approached via a raised terrace with a cream painted rendered retaining wall and paved with light-reflecting Indian Sandstone. A deck intersects with the terrace and gives access from the children’s playroom to the terrace and the lawn. A circular seating area with a radial pergola is a great place to enjoy the last of the evening sunshine. Low-maintenance planting with shrubs, perennials, and bulbs gives year round colour. Some gorgeous metallic-finish planters with box topiary give the terrace a stylish 21st Century look.
