A canal-side garden in Winchfield, Hampshire

A large garden beside the canal in Hampshire. The existing character cottage is being extended in a contemporary style and the garden needs to match the new house.

Visual

The brief was to create a new front garden that made use of the large space, but also allowed sufficient parking for at least 6 cars. The rear garden is to be used for entertaining, but needs to be safe for children as well as providing multiple spaces for outdoor eating and relaxing with friends and family.

3D Model

The new scheme includes a steel moon gate, a large Koi pond, a sunken seating area, an outdoor kitchen and a large, sunny front courtyard as well as ample parking and lots of planting to soften the hard landscaping and blend the property in with its surroundings. There is a boardwalk along the canal and a jetty for launching canoes and fishing.

Contemporary family garden in Berkshire

This Berkshire garden has been split into rooms each with a different atmosphere and purpose. A new orangery will open up onto the large entertaining terrace with raised beds an outdoor kitchen, a gas fireplace, and a hot tub. The children have their own space with a play house. There is a side courtyard for breakfast and more intimate meals. The front has been opened up with raised planters, new railiings and a resin-bound gravel driveway.

Passivhaus garden in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire

This garden is one acre of a 3-acre plot in a rural location just outside Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. The client is building a new Passivhaus and wanted a garden with a large outdoor entertaining space, and an interesting garden that blends the house with its surroundings.

Master Plan

The garden is designed as a series of sweeping curves that loosely enclose large outdoor rooms for various purposes. A self-binding gravel path winds around the perimeter creating a dry route round the whole garden.

3D Model

A circular evening entertaining space with a large fire pit at the rear of the garden is enclosed by a sculpted grass mound and entered through a moon gate.

There is a full outdoor kitchen with stainless steel cupboards, and a circular seating area with built-in benches and a contemporary steel pergola.

A large family garden in Denham Village, Buckinghamshire

The garden surrounds a large, Oak-framed new build house in Denham. The plot is roughly 1-acre on a slight slope and elevated above the footpath at the front of the property.

Before

The brief was to preserve the small piece of woodland on the North-West side of the garden and create an elegant family garden around the house.

3D Visual

The scheme includes a swimming pool, a pool house, a parterre to the front of the house, and a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen. The woodland area has been cleared and Breedon gravel pathways loop around it passing through a clearing with benches and a natural firepit. Oak arches span the pathway that enters the woodland from the main garden area to mark the transition.

Contemporary Small Garden Design, Ascot, Berkshire

This is a typical newish build estate-type rear garden - small, an odd shape with a slight level change both lengthwise and across its width.

Before

The brief for the new design was to make the garden more attractive with larger seating areas that make maximum use of the sunniest spots of this North facing plot. The client prefers curved shapes and wanted the garden to be more interesting and to function as an outdoor room. A key requirement was to provide outdoor space for the clients two boisterous dogs whilst keeping them out of the borders to prevent them destroying the plants. The client's preference is for textural, architectural planting with some spots of colour provided by dramatic perennials such as Agapanthus.

Master Plan

This scheme has two interlocking circular lawns separated by curved stone pathways, flanked with raised borders. Two half-moon shaped raised beds to either side of the enlarged patio area, and a circular planter in the centre of the terrace elevate the planting and provide informal seating and visual interest. The raised planting will discourage the dogs from jumping straight onto the borders and should preserve the new planting. The patio area extends down the side of the garden to provide a generous dining area, plus additional seating in the part of the garden that has the most sun.

Family garden design for a new build in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire

A new house will be constructed on this medium-sized plot in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. The client wanted a scheme that would reflect the prestigious nature of the new house and give the development wide appeal to working families.

Before

The scheme includes a large in-out resin-bound gravel driveway with a raised planter and an elegant brick wall and railings to the front boundary. The rear garden features a large curved terrace, curving perimeter pathways around a large central lawn area flanked by planted borders. A pergola along one boundary and pleached trees along another will help screen the garden and make it feel very private. There is also a sunken seating area for enjoying an intimate dinner or evening drink.
